William walked into the ballroom with his sister on his arm, praying that no one would give Olivia the cut direct. She had been anxious enough about coming out this evening, and it was made even more difficult by the fact that it had been some days since they had last seen Lady Landerbelt and Miss Newton.

It was, of course, quite acceptable to be without their company for a short time, but even so, William had found himself growing almost listless as he struggled to turn his thoughts anywhere other than Miss Newton. Even Olivia had noticed and teased him mercilessly for an hour or so, until he had been forced to admit that, yes, he did find Miss Newton a very agreeable creature and was, in fact, missing her company.

However, whilst Olivia had smiled for an hour or so, she had soon fallen back into melancholy, which he had been unable to prevent himself from joining. She was worried that due to his lack of forthrightness about Lord Winchester’s brother, Lady Landerbelt and Miss Newton might no longer wish to aid them. He had tried to encourage Olivia in this, of course, stating that she had nothing to concern herself with since she had not known about this gentleman either, whilst underneath it all, he felt just as anxious himself.

There had been no letter, no note or any kind of communication from Lady Landerbelt or Miss Newton at all, save for the invitation to Lady Huntington’s ball, which had been sent with a note stating that Lady Landerbelt had requested specifically that they be able to attend. William had written back at once, accepting the invitation, all the while praying that this meant Lady Landerbelt still planned to help Olivia.

If only he had told them the truth about it all, instead of tucking it away and telling himself that there was nothing in it, then there would be no cause for this anxiety.

Lord Caversham scanned the ballroom, looking for Lady Landerbelt and Miss Newton. He knew that even catching a glimpse of Miss Newton would set his heart aflutter, but he certainly hoped that she would grant him an opportunity to write his name on her dance card.

“There she is,” he heard Olivia whisper, her fingers tightening on his arm for a moment. “There, with Lord Winchester.”

William felt his blood begin to boil before he’d so much as set eyes on Miss Newton, hating that she was once again in Lord Winchester’s arms. Had he not explained himself well enough? Did she not know that Lord Winchester, more than Lord Dewford, was the reason behind the stain to his sister’s good name?

“Calm yourself, Caversham,” Olivia warned, clearly able to see the frustration and anger on his face. “Do not make yourself quite so obvious, my dear brother. They are sure to see you and comment on it.”

He did not have to ask who “they” were, knowing full well that the beau monde, as one, would have beady eyes settling on them already.
